These guidelines ensure counsellors act in the best interest of the clients and protects both the clients and counsellors, and ensure counselling is done professionally. Key components of counselling ethics include confidentiality and data protection, boundaries, integrity, referrals, accreditation, supervision and continuous professional development. Selfcare is a set of activities that counsellors practice to maintain their total well-being while safeguarding means protecting people from issues including physical harm, emotional, legal, sexual harm etc. Counsellors have a duty to recognise the signs of abuse and to act on any concerns to safeguard clients.
